  • Importance of Insects

Insects can be found in every environment on Earth.

Insects have adapted to a broad range of habitats, successfully finding their own niche, because they will eat almost any substance that has nutritional value.

    • In the environment, some insects pollinate flowering plants.
    • Insects produce useful substances, such as honey, wax, lacquer, and silk.
    • Insects are food sources in some parts of the world.

  • Activity 1

Organize a school grounds field trip for the students.

Students will observe different soil samples to see the variety of insects living in and around their school grounds. (This can be done in different seasons, so they can understand the cycle of life).

    Discuss their observation and questions.

Students can study the lifecycle of an insect through its egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.

Students can create drawings or sculptures of each stage. (Sculptures can be made from the available material or with the use of papier-mâché)

    • Activity 2

Take students outside to the school's playground.

Invite students to discuss their background knowledge of insects, a variety of insects.

Students, working in small groups, investigate the insect world.

Organize a variety of text and electronic resources for students to use as they participate in this activity.

      • Activity 3

Invite an entomologist to speak with students about his work.

Prior to the visit, students compose questions for the interview.

After the meeting, students can create a poster with photographs and information.

INFO : An entomologist is a specific type of zoologist, or animal scientist. While other zoologists might focus on mammals or reptiles, entomologists are fascinated with the most prolific organisms on earth — insects. Some entomologists classify and study species, while others are certified to be pest control experts, helping people battle bugs like cockroaches and termites in their homes. The Greek word entomon, or "insect," is at the root of entomologist.

        • Activity 4

Individual students choose one insect that intrigues them, becoming an expert on that particular bug.

Find out what it looks like, what size it is, where it lives, what it eats, and other details.
