  • Defining the Weather

Put very simply, weather is the state of the atmosphere at any given period of time.

The atmosphere is made up of the gasses, like oxygen, that surround the Earth. What is happening in the atmosphere is the weather. Weather includes several different factors that we can measure.

Have you ever watched the weather forecast on the news or online?

What kind of things do they tell us?

Most weather forecasts will tell us what the temperature will be, if it's going to rain or snow, and whether it will be cloudy or sunny.

Those factors combine together to make the weather.

  • What is temperature ?

The temperature is a common term used in daily conversation. To put it simply, the temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is. The temperature of an object is usually associated with some sort of scale, such as Fahrenheit (⁰F) or Celsius (⁰C).

Thermometers are used to measure the temperature and this is a very important part of weather forecasting. Many thermometers come in a glass tube that contains a liquid, usually mercury or alcohol. The liquid expands when it’s hotter and contracts when it is colder.

As the temperature changes, the liquid inside the thermometer will either rise or shrink. When the liquid inside the thermometer rises, the temperature has gone up. The temperature can be read from the scale on the side of the thermometer.
